Rick first picked up his turning tools in 2008 as a distraction from his IT day job. From the first shaving that flew off a cheap and cheerful second hand lathe, Rick was hooked and woodturning was the future.
Through watching many of the best demonstrators on the circuit, undertaking challenging commissions and spending hours at the lathe, Rick has developed his skills and style of turning. He has established a reputation for exploring turning outside of the ‘Round and Brown’ often incorporating alternative materials into his pieces. Rick is best known for his multi axis and off centre work turned on a jig he has developed.
Rick regularly demonstrates at clubs and events across the UK presenting technical projects aimed to inspire others to broaden their turning ambitions and ideas.
Rick also provides training from his well-equipped workshop in Derbyshire as well as turning bespoke commissions to customers’ requirements.
Rick is pleased to take on commission work, typically artistic pieces, architectural features, replacement components for furniture repairs and restoration and small batches of copy turning. Please note that he is not a production turner so cannot help with large production runs. Please use the Contact Me page to let Rick know your requirements.

Rick takes pride in presenting his style of woodturning in a manner to interest and inform turners of all levels of experience. The demonstration subjects span the varied work that Rick undertakes including multi-axis and off centre work as well as projects to illustrate more conventional turning techniques. Clear narratives take you step by step through the processes ensuring a thorough understanding of the steps being followed.
Rick can also offer IRDs (Interactive Remote Demonstrations) for viewing at your club venue or from the comfort of your armchair.
